Small Town Saturday Night

Below is an article I did for the Halifax Courier in March 2010 as I was so impressed by Trevors books.
As a result I got loads of contact from people I knew from the past and some from People who just wanted to say hello.

Hi Just seen the Evening Courier and was surprised to see the photos and article you provided. Remember me ?? Carol, John Bell's wife It was lovely to see your photos and remember the good times. Kind regards Carol
John Bell was the singer in Peter and the Wolves and a dear friend, sadly he died in 1982

Hi Jim, After years wondering whatever happened to Jim Brearley there you are in the Courier, so I just thought I would say "hello" for old times sake. Where did all the time go? It doesn't seem two minutes since we were sitting together in Kays office sorting invoices and wages. However, you seem to have come a long way since then and I am very pleased for you. I know that you are quite a bit younger than me and couldn't believe that you are retired, but then I still think of you with the moustache and longish dark hair. Anyway Jim, all the best, Rita
Rita Sykes, lovely lady ( like a big sister) was my office manager at Kayes of Brighouse Hello Jim,
I enjoyed your piece in the Courier 25/03/10 it will have stirred up many memories for people of a "certain age".
Hope you get some great feed-back from readers ---- if you google Jean

have been doing since I retired!

Hi Jim David Hughes here just received in the post the Halifax Courier article forwarded to me by my sister in law in Halifax. Whay a good article.Brings back some great memores. The really interesting thing is I too moved from Halifax and have lived in Cambridgeshire for nearly 30 years.Spent the bulk of that in Further Education ,now retired. When I was 50 some 13 years ago now we reformed The original Misfits which has been more enjoyable second time around in a different way. You sound as though you have done very well for yourself, congratulations. Perhaps we can catch up sometime Best Wishes David Hughes
I hope to catch up with Dave very soon, Misfits great band.
Hi Jim
It was goo to read your Nostalgia Column in the Halifax Courier on 25 March.I read with interest of your early Rock‘n’Roll years, and subsequent business success at both Asda and Tolo Toys, but it was with great surprise that I realised that you had, very modestly, omitted to mention your greatest achievement – namely steering a bunch of true renegades, known as Junction Athletic, to promotion in the Brighouse Sunday League!!!It seems like only yesterday that we were turning out every Sunday morning, come rain or shine, then whiling away our Sunday afternoon’s in the pub, win, lose or draw.
It’s great to see that you have made a success and good for you.
Best wishes.

What a nice thing to say, I think I was manager because my wife washed the kit.

I helped Trevor with bits I could remember. His books are so well researched and factual as you remarked.Went to 2nd launch twas wonderful. I am still on the treadmill to oblivion but the job is on its arse at the moment. My bastard mates in the pub say what is the difference between Man Utd and Johnnie Casson ? Man Utd have Giggs!!!!! Hope to bump into you sometime.Y'all take care now.
Johnnie
One of my hero's great drummer, funny man, nice guy did loads of charity work for me raising money for childrens charities.
The Cresters were great musicians they must wonder whats going on in the industry they have more skill than most artists would give their right arm for... having said that if you are a guitarist ????
Hi Jim,
It was great to read your article in the courier and see the photos of your groups – you’ve likely guessed by the email address I am the son of John & Carol Bell (mum told me she’d been in touch and you’ve arranged to meet up!)I was wondering if you have any recordings at all, neither me or my sister Julie can recall dad singing & it would be great to hear anything you might have.
Thanks in advance.
Jason Bell
Jason son of John Bell, hope we can keep in touch
Hi Jim
Just been reading the article on the Halifax Courier web site, and couldn't believe my eyes! after all these years. Do you remember me? Glyn Hanson? long time ago but myself, Malc Pickard, Malc Frethey and Pete Ashworth used to meet on friday evening at "the tackle shop" to discuss the weekends fishing and buy a pint or two of maggots! We used to chat away for ages much to the annoyance of "Mr Wood" who thought you should get on with some work, he was a miserable old bloke I recall. I have just "dug out" the attached pictures taken at Lochmaben on our many pike fishing trips up to Scotland, in case you wonder what the hell we are up to, we are serving you your bacon and egg breakfast, Newcastle Brown ale for breakfast!! Malc Frethey has an interesting hairdo! although min eisn't much better! the 60s!!!!! I haven't seen either of my old fishing pals for many years but Malc Frethey and I exchange Christmas Cards every year, he is now a Prisoner Officer at Armley jail in Leeds and lives in Cleckheaton, don't know anything about Malc Pickard I wonder if he is still in the building trade?
We also helped you to "do up" what I think was your first house in Greetland, I recall it needed quite a bit of work, and we all helped with the replastering whilst listening to The Supremes Greatest Hits!
I now am also retired and live in Crete having sold up and moved to our "place in the sun" with my wife Sheila in 2005.
It would be great to hear from you again after all these years.
Cheers.
Glyn
